Filtering Artworks
Quickly find artworks matching criteria
One of the most useful features of Valise is the ability to filter works to quickly answer questions about your archive.
From your Artworks page, you can quickly filter artworks down to answer questions, like:
- Which works are currently available and in the studio?
- What works are consigned right now?
- Which works still need to be photographed?
- Which works are tagged “unpaid” but already sold?
Basics
Adding filters
From your Artworks page, tap the Filter box in the top-left to add filters to your view. You’ll be able to select from a variety of filter types.
You can add multiple filters at once. Each new filter you add further narrows down the results. In other words, an artwork needs to match all filters to be shown.
Filter types
We currently offer seven filter types:
- Title: Filters by the title of the artwork.
- Year: Filters by the year the artwork was created. You can filter by a single year, before or after a year, or whether or not the year is set.
- Location: Filters by the location where the artwork is currently located. You can filter by a single location, or whether or not the location is set.
- Images: Filters by the images attached to the artwork. You can filter by whether or not the artwork has images, or whether or not the images are set.
- Status: Filters by the status of the artwork. You can filter by a single status, or whether or not the status is set.
- Tag: Filters by the tag attached to the artwork. You can filter by a single tag, or whether or not the tag is set.
- Artists: Filters by the artists attached to the artwork. You can filter by a single artist, or whether or not the artist is set.
Filters are smart and will try to give the expected result even when not captured directly in your metadata. For example, if an artwork has a year of “2001–2003”, filtering for “2002” will show it too. This also works with the shortened “2001-03” format.
Tips & tricks
- After filtering, you can press Cmd+A or Ctrl+A on your keyboard to quickly select all the works in the list and make a collection with them.
- After filtering, opening an artwork page will keep your filters in place. You can also navigate to the next or previous artwork in the filter using the arrows in the top-right of the page, or with the j and k keys. This makes it easy to quickly browse or edit a subset of your archive.
